8 Tips to Talk to Your Child About War and Conflict When war or crisis dominates the news, your child might feel scared, confused, or even unsafe even if the conflict is far away.

Here's how you can help them cope:

🧠 1. Ask what they know and how they feel Use open-ended questions to invite their thoughts. Listen without judgment and give them space to share.
🖍 2. Use age-appropriate language Use simple, reassuring words. Avoid too much detail and tailor the discussion to their age and sensitivity.
💛 3. Spread compassion, not stigma Avoid labeling anyone as "bad." Instead, focus on kindness and empathy for all people affected by the conflict.
🤝 4. Focus on the helpers Share stories of people doing good aid workers, doctors, peacebuilders to show that humanity exists even in hard times.
💬 5. Close conversations with care End on a positive note. Reassure them of their safety and remind them they can talk to you anytime.
👀 6. Keep checking in Their feelings may change over time. Revisit the conversation, especially if there are news updates or signs of stress.
📵 7. Limit news exposure Control how much and what kind of news they see. Too much exposure can increase anxiety, especially before bedtime.
🌿 8. Take care of yourself too Your calm presence is their biggest anchor. Manage your own stress so you can model stability and security.
